Below is a letter The Orfalea Foundation received from Laura Burton Capps, who along with No Kid Hungry spokesman Jeff Bridges, has been a vocal proponent of summer feeding in Santa Barbara County. We encourage our readers to forward this posting to contacts within Santa Barbara County and beyond. Getting the word out before summer is in full swing can make all the difference to hungry kids whose parents may not be aware of this life saving program.
Summer is upon us! I am hoping we can work together in the coming weeks to get the word out to families that there are 31 places around the county where any child 18 and under can get a free, healthy meal this summer — no questions asked, and no paper work to fill out. As you all well know, hunger is at its worst in the summer.
Like last year, No Kid Hungry is giving SB County access to its texting program to help make it easier for families to find the locations that work best for them. By texting FOOD4KIDS to 877-877 you can find the closest free meal site to you. We made a lot of progress last year but this year we have even more lead-time to make use of the texting program.
All evidence shows that texting is the most utilized way to get information amongst the families we are trying to reach. Please let me know if there are any thoughts, ideas or questions. I’d especially like ideas about how to reach more people.
Attached are summer feeding flyers in English and Spanish that we are trying to distribute to as many channels that reach as many people as possible. I’ve also attached the list of 31 summer feeding sites.
