On Thursday, May 30th the City of Santa Barbara, Share Our Strength, SB Unified School District, Foodbank of Santa Barbara County, and the Community Action Commission are hosting a music event to showcase the wonderful summer meals programs throughout the county.
We will hear from Congresswoman Lois Capps, Mayor Helene Schneider, Santa Barbara School Superintendent, David Cash and others. And we’ll enjoy food and music, featuring talented young musicians from the Rock Shop: the Wa-Was and Stolen Thunder.
For the past three years, I have been proud to serve as the national spokesperson of Share our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign. This spring, we began working more directly within my own community to ensure that Santa Barbara County becomes a No Kid Hungry County and our kids get the nutrition they need to thrive.
Despite all of the fresh produce grown here and healthy food that’s available, there are almost 22,000 food insecure children in Santa Barbara County. That’s over 23% of children who don’t have ready or reliable access to the food they need to lead healthy, active, and productive lives. Over 80 percent of children who eat free school lunch are not getting a free summer meal, when they need it the most.
Fortunately Santa Barbara County has many dedicated and effective government and non-profit service providers who are partnering together like never before to tackle the problem of childhood hunger.
The purpose of the May 30th gathering is to raise awareness about the dozens of places that kids can get free — and nutritious — meals this summer. We will be kicking off a texting program that will make it easier for families to find out the closest summer meal programs (Text Food4Kids to 877-877). The many service providers in the county will be on hand and the Santa Barbara Unified School District’s Food Service Department will be serving the kind of nutritious food that is part of the summer programs.
